How Beauty Standard can Control Women's Happiness

Beauty is something that can not be separated from a woman happiness. Beauty is commonly described as a feature of object that makes these objects pleasurable to perceive. Another definition of beauty is the quality that present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind. Every woman originally had and received the beauty they had as they should. However, as time goes by, the identity of each woman's beauty begins to fade and instead they compete to be beautiful by common standards, and it often makes them turning themselves into 'another figure'. People began to set general beauty standards. For anyone who doesn't fulfill it, they can say that they are not beautiful.

The beginning of this beauty standard appeared since ancient times. As the example that can be used is Sita, Rama's wife. Sita used to be the center of beauty and finally during the colonial era, the center of beauty changed to the figure of a colonial woman and so on, until various kinds of beauty products emerge that support women towards their beauty. At first, the beauty that was made still contained an Indonesian beauty identity. However, the center of Indonesian beauty has changed into a Korean or European beauty standard. As the example, the typical Indonesian sweet black, bright brown, and creamy yellow skin turns into white skin. This proves that beauty standards will continue to evolve and may differ over time. The existence of beauty standards that sound unreasonable is unintentionally supported by several parties. As the simple example that we can see from Instagram social media accounts especially for beautiful women at the  campus. To see what kind of standard is used as the reference, here are two of them

First, a perfect physical appearance. Those are include slim body, pointed nose, long legs, and a clean face without acne. Those things are the standard that is made by people to look pretty. The standard might sound a little impossible. It is because every person has their own ideal body size. We don't have to be as slim as the international models body, we don't have to be tall, and we also can't force our destiny to have a sharp nose and a face without acne. We should be happy without following all those standards. We should also be able to get the same treatment even though we are different.

Second, white skin. Like what we have discussed in the previous paragraph, our standard of skin tone now is white skin.  Many people are competing to whiten their skin. There are a lot of certain products that promise one of their properties, which is to whiten the skin. As for some beauty products and technologies that are made with the aim of instantly whitening the skin. This proves that having white skin seems to be a necessity, especially for women. The original skin color of Indonesians is more towards sweet black, tan, and olive, but there are so many people who cannot accept that. They think that white skin makes them more beautiful and confident. Whatever the skin color we have there is nothing wrong or bad. Everything is beautiful. Not being white is also not a drawback. In fact, many people actually feel sad when they do not meet these standards.

After all, here we can see that all the beauty standards that exist in Indonesia make many women put their happiness on these standards. They will feel happy and satisfied when they can meet the existing standards. They think by becoming what is in accordance with existing standards, they can be happy. When in fact, without fulfilling all of them and still being what we are, we can also continue to live happily. The happiness that we want to feel we can actually get by accepting, not necessarily by changing.
